Support and understanding are essential tools for helping our most vulnerable neighbors end their homelessness and live in a safe and stable home.
Esther and her best friend, her dog Penny, now have a place to live together safely thanks to support from both the community and CFTH. The 71-year-old and her beloved pet moved out of their unsafe RV, stayed several nights in a motel, and received medical care before moving into their new home in Esther’s sister’s house. CFTH supported Esther each step of the way.
“I am always amazed at how many people experiencing homelessness have pets. They live with them almost 24 hours per day, care for them dearly, and tend to have a very unique relationship with their pet,” shares Dr. Dave Slocum, a retired veterinarian and volunteer caring for people and their pets without homes. “Most of the time, a person experiencing homelessness will not accept shelter or housing unless they can have their dog or cat with them.”
When provided the right care, people and their pets have more options for a safe place to live. We can all understand love for our pets. Respecting this bond is important for the individuals and families we serve at CFTH. Esther and Penny have a fresh start! What a relief for all involved!
